This year, staging the Danae Festival has above all meant “getting to the bottom of things”. We entered the new year after making profound changes in order to innovate our way of doing things, not as a matter of survival, but to open up to new challenges. It is with this feeling of renewal and innovation that we have thought about this year’s Danae Festival. For a number of reasons, staging a festival is complicated work that we like to refer to as a “laboratory”. This is a key word in our project, which is increasingly an opportunity not only to express and share ideas, but also a chance for them to emerge, grow and then “go out into the world”.
Two terms have guided this year’s programming: internationalization and an interdisciplinary approach. Thanks to the project of the European network of which Danae is a partner, we have not only managed to increase our international presence, but also give the Italian artists we support opportunities to be circulated and produced by this network. This is because we are convinced that not only is it essential to expand artists’ field of action at a time when Italy offers fewer and fewer opportunities, but that it is also fundamental for professional growth as well as the city of Milan.
The interdisciplinary nature of our projects has always been one of the Festival’s distinctive features, but this year it is especially evident, because they span the broadest range of codes. These projects reveal the signs of research straddling the visible and the invisible, requiring a different kind of attention that works on subtle levels. In different ways, the subversion of perception, vision and rules cuts across all the projects, some of which strive to bring the scene back to its political function but without rhetoric, seeking new ways to participate in the creative act.
In short, we are offering a programme of which our tutelary spirit, the myth of fertility Danae, would be proud.
